What the physiological sigh is
The physiological sigh is the body’s natural breath "reset": two nasal inhales in a row — one deep, plus a short top-up — followed by a long, complete mouth exhale. You do it without noticing when you cry, right before falling asleep, or whenever the body needs to reinflate the lungs’ alveoli. The voluntary version simply reproduces that pattern on purpose, two or three times, when you feel stress rising.
What the evidence says
It is the emergency technique with the most direct evidence in this section. The sigh-as-respiratory-reset phenomenon was described by neurobiologists Jack Feldman (UCLA) and Mark Krasnow (Stanford); Andrew Huberman popularized it as a voluntary tool, and a Stanford controlled trial (Balban et al., 2023, in Cell Reports Medicine) compared three breathing exercises against mindfulness meditation: "cyclic sighing" practiced 5 minutes a day produced the largest improvements in mood and the biggest reduction in resting respiratory rate.
The mechanism is twofold: the second inhale reopens collapsed alveoli, allowing more CO2 to be offloaded on the exhale; and the long exhale slows the heart via the reflex known as respiratory sinus arrhythmia. That is why it works within seconds, with no session or prior practice needed.
How and when to use it
Follow the orb: deep nasal inhale, short top-up inhale (even if it feels like no more air fits), then a long, complete mouth exhale, like a balloon deflating. One to three repetitions are enough for emergency use — during a spike of overwhelm, before replying in anger, when you notice your heart racing. Frequently asked questions
How is it different from a normal deep breath?
The double inhale. That short second inhale reopens collapsed air sacs, something a single deep breath does not achieve as well — and it is what makes the following exhale offload more CO2 and calm you faster.
Does it help with a panic attack?
It can help bring the spike down because it acts within seconds, which is why we use it as the first step in our panic-attack session. But if you feel chest pain or severe difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical attention — no breathing exercise replaces that evaluation.
How often can I do it per day?
No practical limit for point-in-time use (1-3 sighs whenever needed). As a daily practice, the Stanford-studied protocol was 5 minutes a day. If you feel dizzy, stop and breathe normally.
