Meditation for regaining motivation when everything feels hard

When everything feels hard, the mind usually demands feeling motivated before acting; picturing the smallest possible first step, already done, helps the body find the momentum that motivation alone isn’t providing.

Sample session

Instead of picturing the entire task you’re struggling to start, picture only the first step, the smallest one possible: opening the document, putting your shoes on, picking up the phone to make that call. Picture yourself doing exactly that, nothing more, with the same sense of relief you feel when something small is already done. You don’t need to feel motivated to take that minimal first step — motivation, when it shows up, usually arrives after starting, not before. Once you’re done picturing it, give yourself the option to do just that right now, without committing to the rest of the task yet.
