Meditation for feeling grateful on a hard day
On a truly bad day, looking for something big to be grateful for usually fails; finding something tiny and concrete is more honest and, paradoxically, more sustainable than forcing big gratitude.
Sample session
Today we’re not going to look for three big things to be grateful for — on a hard day that can feel forced or even cruel. Let’s look for just one tiny thing: maybe the coffee was good this morning, maybe someone held the door for you, maybe the sun came through the window for a moment. It doesn’t need to make up for the rest of the day or fix it. Name that small thing and stay with it for a few seconds, noticing what it feels like to have noticed it, without demanding you feel more than you do. A hard day is still hard after this exercise — what changes isn’t the day, but that attention found, if only for an instant, something that wasn’t just difficulty.
