Meditation for stopping negative rumination
When the mind repeats the same negative thought on a loop, trying to reason with it usually feeds it more; anchoring attention to what’s immediately sensory gives the mind another concrete place to be.
Sample session
Instead of continuing to turn over the thought that keeps repeating, let’s anchor attention to the present. Name in your head 5 things you can see around you right now, with some detail for each one: not just “a chair”, but its color or texture. Then 4 things you can touch: the clothes you’re wearing, the surface under your hands. Then 3 sounds you can hear, however distant or small. Then 2 smells, even just the air in the room. And finally, 1 thing you can taste right now, even just the inside of your mouth. The thought will probably come back afterward — that’s normal — but this exercise gives the mind a real break from the loop, even if brief.
