Meditation for clearing your mind while walking

When sitting still to meditate feels impossible or counterproductive, bringing that same full attention to the rhythm of your steps turns an ordinary walk into a practice in itself.

Sample session

Start walking at a pace slightly slower than usual, somewhere you can move freely, indoors or outside. Instead of letting your mind drift to your to-do list or an unfinished conversation, direct your attention to the concrete sensations of walking: the foot making contact with the ground, the weight shifting from one foot to the other, the natural swing of the arms. When you notice your mind has wandered off — and it will, often — don’t judge yourself, just return your attention to the next step. Every so often you can widen your attention to what’s around you — a sound, the air on your skin — without stopping. No special pace or minimum duration is needed; even five minutes of walking this way, with real attention to the body in motion, changes how the rest of the day feels.
