Meditation for finding calm with a newborn and sleep deprivation

With a newborn, real rest isn’t always possible; scanning the body with attention in whatever minutes are available, however brief, provides some recovery even when there’s no time to actually sleep.

Sample session

In whatever minutes you have, even while the baby takes a short nap, sit or lie down and scan the body from the feet up: feet, legs, belly, chest, shoulders, arms, neck, face. Don’t try to fall asleep or fully relax — there may not be time for that — just notice, area by area, where there’s tiredness or built-up tension. This exercise doesn’t replace the real sleep you’re probably missing, but a few minutes of attention to the body, even without sleeping, does provide some real recovery, different from zero rest at all.
