Meditation for processing the loss of a pet
Grief over a pet is sometimes minimized from the outside (“it was just an animal”), which can make it harder, not easier, to let yourself feel it with the same seriousness as any other significant loss.
Sample session
Sit comfortably and bring your pet to mind, with a specific memory — a gesture, a sound, a moment of the day you shared. Let yourself feel whatever comes up, without the expectation that this grief should hurt less just because it was an animal. Now mentally direct a few phrases toward yourself: “may I let myself feel this loss without rushing it, may I be kind to myself for what I miss, may I remember with warmth as well as with pain.” If it helps, also take a few seconds to silently give thanks for what that relationship gave you, without that meaning you’ve “gotten over” anything. There’s no correct timeline for this grief.
