Meditation for feeling less lonely
Loneliness doesn’t always resolve with more immediate social contact; directing goodwill toward other people, near or far, reminds the body that it’s still part of something larger, even if it’s alone right now.
Sample session
Sit comfortably. Instead of directing the loving-kindness phrases only at yourself this time, widen the circle: think of someone you love, even if they’re not nearby right now, and repeat mentally “may you be well, may you be at peace.” Then think of someone more neutral — a neighbor, someone from work — and repeat the same phrase. Finally, widen the phrase to “everyone who feels lonely right now, may they find some company, even if small.” This doesn’t replace the real human connection you probably need, but it reminds the body that this moment’s loneliness isn’t the same as being completely disconnected from others.
