Meditation for easing the tension of caring for a sick family member

Caring for someone who’s ill keeps the body in a near-constant state of alertness, even during apparently calm moments; deliberately releasing that tension, even for a few minutes, isn’t a luxury or a lapse in care.

Sample session

Find a moment, even a brief one, when you can sit by yourself. We’ll move through the body tensing and releasing: the shoulders, raising them toward the ears and letting them drop; the hands, clenching into fists and opening; the jaw, tightening for a moment and releasing. Notice how much tension you’d been holding without realizing it, sustaining a constant alertness in case you’re needed. These few minutes don’t take anything away from the person you’re caring for — a body that allows itself to release tension, even briefly, sustains caregiving better over time than one that never does.
