Meditation for relaxing the jaw and teeth-grinding tension

Jaw tension often builds up during the day unnoticed until discomfort shows up; deliberately tensing it and releasing it teaches the body the difference between clenching and actually resting.

Sample session

Sit comfortably and bring your attention to the jaw. Clench your teeth with moderate force for about 5 seconds — without hurting yourself — then release all at once, letting your mouth fall slightly open. Notice the contrast between the tension and the rest. Repeat this two or three times. Now do the same with your forehead, scrunching it up and releasing, and with your shoulders, raising them toward your ears and letting them drop. The jaw is one of the areas where tension builds up the most without us noticing, especially during sleep — repeating this exercise before bed, not just during the day, helps the body arrive at nighttime with less baseline tension there.
