Meditation for built-up muscle tension
When physical tension has been building for days and a simple stretch doesn’t resolve it, deliberately tensing each muscle group before releasing it teaches the body a contrast that passive relaxation doesn’t always achieve.
Sample session
Get comfortable, sitting or lying down. We’ll move through the body by muscle group. Start with the feet: curl your toes tightly for about 5 seconds, then release all at once, noticing the contrast. Move to the calves: tense, hold, release. Continue with the thighs, the glutes, the belly — squeeze each area firmly without hurting yourself, then let it go completely. Continue with the hands (clenched fists), the arms, the shoulders (raised toward the ears), and finish with the face, scrunching it up and then releasing. After each tension, take a few seconds to notice the difference between how that area felt tense and how it feels now, let go. That contrast, repeated across the whole body, is what teaches the nervous system to recognize and release tension it had been holding without you noticing.
