Meditation for relaxing after exercise

The body often stays activated for a while after training, even once the effort has ended; deliberately tensing and releasing each muscle group helps complete that transition into rest.

Sample session

Once you’ve showered or at least your pulse is coming down, lie down or sit comfortably. We’ll move through the body by muscle group, paying special attention to the ones you worked hardest today. Tense that area firmly for a few seconds, then release all at once, noticing the contrast between the tension of effort and real rest. Continue with the rest of the body: legs, belly, back, shoulders, hands, face. This isn’t about stretching or working the muscle further, but about teaching the nervous system that the effort is over and it’s time for something else now. Finish by noticing, without judging, how the whole body feels compared to before you started today’s exercise.
